THE GOAL FOR SEASON 2 (AND BEYOND)
FUTURE DIRECTION
Bungie’s goal is to double down on Marathon’s core fantasy: surviving on the edge of explored space, while expanding what that survival experience can look like.
Starting in Season 2, the game’s future is being built around two major goals:
Making the main survival experience deeper, stranger, and more rewarding.
Creating more ways to play for different moods, group sizes, and stress levels.
A BETTER EXPERIENCE FOR EVERYONE
Bungie wants Marathon to remain tense, dangerous, and high-stakes, but with more mind-bending sci-fi layered into the experience.
Future updates will focus on:
New zones.
Zone changes and variants.
New Runner shells.
New weapons and equipment.
More loot.
New seasonal progression systems.
New contracts tied to faction growth and exploration.
SEASON 2 ADDITIONS
Night Marsh will introduce a new layer of challenge.
Sentinel is being added as a new defensive Runner shell.New weapons and equipment are coming.
The Cradle will revamp how Runner shell stats are acquired, giving players more build options.
Faction and Runner level progression rates are being increased.
BEYOND SEASON 2
Bungie is exploring a new zone with stronger alien themes and mind-warping debuffs.
New enemies are planned, including threats from Tau Ceti and beyond.
More battery-based weapons are being worked on.
New exfil methods are being explored, with tradeoffs between loot safety and how much players can carry out.
Quality-of-Life & Progression Improvements
Bungie is also focusing on smoothing out the overall player experience.
The goal is to make Marathon feel better whether players are playing a little or a lot.
Players should have an easier time finding challenges that match their gear, skill level, and progression.
PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS
Duos rotating zone queue is coming in Season 2.
A new matchmaking system is coming in Season 2 to improve match quality while giving higher-end players more flexibility.
Vault size is being expanded in Season 2.
UX improvements are planned for Season 2 and beyond to make setting goals and getting into matches smoother.
Onboarding improvements are planned for Season 3 and beyond to make the game less overwhelming for new players.
Contract system improvements are planned for Season 3 and beyond, especially around Priority Contracts and how players interact with them.
EXPERIMENTAL MODES
Season 2 will include two experimental modes:
An early-season mode focused mostly on PvE, with a light touch of PvP.
A later Season 2 mode that is PvE-only, focused on crews completing objectives together and making progress across matches.
Bungie will continue testing experimental queues beyond Season 2.
Future experiments may include a more pure PvP-focused mode.
Some experimental modes could eventually become permanent parts of Marathon’s core experience.
LONGER TERM ROADMAP
Season 2 will plant the seeds for Marathon’s future through Sentinel, Night Marsh, new systems, and experimental play modes.
Season 3 is planned to bring major early-game experience revisions, big updates to Perimeter, a new Runner shell, and additional unannounced content.
Season 4 will focus on adding more depth to the existing extraction loop.
Season 5 is expected to bring the broader PvPvE ecosystem together while evolving Marathon’s strange sci-fi world in new ways.
